The Gibb brothers hoped Otis Redding would record To Love Somebody. They’d met the soul great in New York and he seemed interested. Surprisingly, the Bee Gees’ own version was a No 41 flop in August 1967 but any hopes of Redding making it a hit were tragically ended when he died in a plane crash just weeks later. Both Nina Simone (No 5 in 1968) and Jimmy Somerville (No 8 in 1990) scored hits with the song.
