The last 36 inhabitants of the island of St Kilda are evacuated to other parts of Scotland.

A number of factors lead to the evacuation. Most of its young men left after the First World War, four men died from the flu in 1926 and there was a series of crop failures in the following years. The last straw came with the death of a young woman, Mary Gillies, who fell ill with appendicitis in January 1930 and was taken to the mainland for treatment. She died in hospital. The remaining islanders took the decision to leave, doing so on Harebell, which took them to Morvern on the mainland.
