Ernest Shackleton completes the rescue of all of his men stranded on Elephant Island in Antarctica.

After his ship, The Endurance, became trapped by the ice, Shackleton and five other men set out for South Georgia, where he knew he could get help, in a tiny 20ft lifeboat, leaving 22 crew stranded on Elephant Island. After reaching South Georgia following an epic 720-mile journey, Shackleton returned to save his remaining crew on August 30.
