Clubs receive a warningtostave off Government getting tough

- By Danny Stewart

The Joint Response Group have reminded Scotland’s top clubs of their responsibilities in the wake of a spike in Covid numbers.

Record daily numbers of new cases been reported in the wake of a relaxation of restrictions.

For football, that has meant the return of crowds to stadiums after a season of games behind closed doors.

However, while that has been warmly welcomed by those within the game, certain scenes at matches have raised concerns for those in charge.

Dundee’s Paul Mcgowan was embraced by Dark Blues supporters in the Dens Park crowd last week as he celebrated his goal against Hibs.

It earned the striker a booking, and Dundee United Peter Pawlett was also cautioned for his dash to the crowd when scoring the winner against St Johnstone.

Multiple incidents of fans going onto the pitch at the end of matches have likewise been noted.

And with emotions likely to run high at today’s Old Firm derby, the JRG have acted to warn clubs that the virus has not gone away.

They e-mailed all clubs with the instruction to remind players and team staff of their responsibilities in relation to Covid.

That covers the adherence to all existing guidance, regulations and protocols.

A Hampden insider said: “By taking the action now, the administrators hope to avoid any further Government sanctions in future.”

Rangers fans have already been urged to get themselves vaccinated, and take a Covid test, before heading to Ibrox.

National Clinical Director, Jason Leitch delivered the advice at the end of last week. He said he felt it was right large-scale events were now going ahead again with guidance.

However, he argued they could always be “made safer” by individuals taking precautions, such as getting vaccinated or tested.

Leitch also stressed that the advice applied just as much – if not more – to those planning to watch football indoors with friends, as those going to matches.
