I’ve talked before about the desperate need to tackle faceless keyboard warriors who abuse other users on sites like Twitter and Facebook. It’s a problem that’s only getting worse but social media giants just aren’t doing enough to deal with the problem – and when they do try to intervene, their moves

don’t get to the heart of the issue. Last week, Twitter announced it was trialling a new “safety mode” for its platform, which will allow users to block accounts and content that features harmful language or sends repetitive, uninvited replies. It’s a good first step, but it seems more like a temporary quick fix than a policy that will actually improve their service. Plus, why is the onus on users?

The only way online abuse will end is if we stop people from being able to hide behind an anonymous avatar. Bring in a requiremen­t for ID, such as driving licence or passport, when setting up an account, and then we’ll talk, Twitter…
