SEPTEMBER 11, 1931 Actor Bill Simpson is born in Dunure, Ayrshire.

He became a hugely popular TV actor, notably for playing the title role in the BBC’S long-running series, Dr Finlay’s Casebook. The show ran for eight series from 1962 and was set in the fictional Highland village of Tannochbra­e in the late 1920s. Simpson passed away in 1986, aged 55, as a result of bronchopne­umonia.
