Six signs it’s time to change your kitchen

- By Laura Coventry

They say it’s the most important room in the home. But if you’re thinking about improving your kitchen it can mean a big financial outlay, and one that probably needs justified. You can get a kitchen refresh for about £1,000 but the average total cost of new units, worktops and appliances is about £8,000. Here are a few reasons why you may need to treat yourself to a new fitted kitchen... 1

Your current kitchen doesn’t have ample storage space. Storage space is one of the most important factors when considering a new kitchen. Perhaps the layout of your current one does you no favours. Maybe there are not enough cabinets or wall cupboards. It’s time to rethink.

2

Your current kitchen is looking tired and boring. If you have dated cupboard doors, an aging floor and cracked or loose tiles in your kitchen, and perhaps not all the appliances work properly or as good as they should, it is time for a revamp.

3

Your current kitchen does not add value to your property. According to experts, a new kitchen can increase the value of your property by 5%-10%, so it could be time to invest.

4

Your current kitchen has little (or no) space to dine and socialise. The kitchen should be a social space for the whole family, as it is not only a place to cook and eat, but gather, so the need for a dining and seated area is essential.

5

Your current kitchen appliances are not energy efficient. If your current kitchen was installed 10-15 years ago, it probably won’t be fitted with the latest energy-saving appliances. The washing machine is one of the most energy-sapping pieces of technology in the home – does yours have an ‘A’ rating or better? And does it clean at low temperatures? Reducing from 40 degrees to 30 degrees is thought to cut energy bills by 38% (according to Which?).

6

Your current kitchen doesn’t make you happy. Because we are spending more time in our kitchens than ever before, it is important that we enjoy the hours we frequent there and that it makes us happy. If your current kitchen bring more frustration than joy, it could be time to choose your dream kitchen.
