Princess at centre of row confides in Diana

-

Meghan and Harry may dominate the headlines today but The Post’s front page in 1985 shows that royal family rows are anything but new.

“Princess Michael of Kent is launching a brave battle this weekend to protect her future in the royal family,” we reported. “The gutsy princess will need all her famous fighting qualities in what has become a battle royal with some of her husband’s family.

“The general frostiness between her and the royal family was heightened by the revelations about her father’s membership of the SS and her romance with American millionaire Ward Hunt. There’s a long-standing – and bitter – feud with Princess Margaret.

“‘The Duchess of Kent, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew have been on friendly terms, but Diana is the only royal princess she feels she can completely trust,’ said a source. ‘She was horrified by suggestions that a highly placed Palace mole was leaking damaging stories about her. She thinks the Queen and Prince Philip acted quickly to stop further leaks.’

“Now she wants to silence the stories that she has been sent to a Royal Coventry for her conduct. Or that in future she’ll be allowed to undertake only low-profile engagements. To put paid to the gossip, she is taking on a new series of public engagements.”
