Pool’s serial-scorer Sadio strikes Palace to draw level with Special K

-

Sadio Mane pulled level with Kevin Keegan on 100 Liverpool goals as Jurgen Klopp’s men sunk Crystal Palace 3-0 to move top of the Premier League for the first time since January.

He reached his milestone from close range two minutes before the break, but the hosts had been forced to withstand some early pressure at Anfield.

Mane also became the first player in Premier League history to score against the same opponent in nine consecutive matches, beating Robin van Persie’s eight against Stoke City.

Patrick Vieira’s Eagles hit the post early through Christian Benteke, who was later subbed by Odsonne Edouard.

The former Celt missed a chance to equalise midway through the second period, but a delicious half-volley from Mo Salah effectively sealed the points on 78 minutes before an equally fine finish from Naby Keita completed the scoring.

In contrast, Manchester City – who had hit 17 goals in their previous four outings – endured a frustrating afternoon as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Southampton.

Saints thought they had earned a chance to break the deadlock just past the hour mark, but a penalty awarded by referee Michael Oliver – plus a red card for City defender, Kyle Walker – were ruled out after a VAR check.

And another VAR check ruled out a scarcely-deserved late winner for City when the ball was bundled home after Alex Mccarthy parried an initial effort from Phil Foden, only for an offside flag to deny Pep Guardiola’s men.

VAR also played a crucial role as Arsenal clung on for their second straight win at Burnley.

Martin Odegaard’s brilliant 30th minute free-kick gave Mikel Arteta’s side the half-time advantage but Burnley looked stronger in the second period.

Sub Matej Vydra was awarded a penalty midway through the second half after falling in the box, but referee Michael Oliver reversed his decision after viewing the evidence.

Everton’s unbeaten start to the season came to a juddering halt as three goals in nine second-half minutes swept Aston Villa to a 3-0 win.

Matty Cash fired past Asmir Begovic in the 66th minute, and just three minutes later Lucas Digne headed a Leon Bailey corner into his own net.

Villa’s surge was complete 15 minutes from time when Bailey slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Ismaila Sarr struck twice as Watford came on strong in the second-half to secure a 3-1 win over Norwich at Carrow Road.

Dennis Bonaventure’s early strike for the visitors was cancelled out by a rare goal in open play from Teemu Pukki on 35 minutes.

Sarr put the Hornets ahead on the counter-attack in the 63rd minute, and defied the offside trap – and another VAR review – to make it three late on.

Ivan Toney starred as Brentford claimed their first top-flight away win with a 2-0 success at struggling Wolves.

Toney put the visitors in front from the spot on 28 minutes, then turned provider to set up Bryan Mbeumo for the second seven minutes later.

Adama Traore hit the woodwork for the hosts but they failed to capitalise, despite Brentford being reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute following a second yellow card for Shandon Baptiste.
