Choosing which school is right

-

Finding the right school environment for your child – one where they can learn in the style that suits them best and enjoy an atmosphere they can thrive in – is so important.

With (generally speaking) smaller class sizes, a large range of subjects and qualification types, as well as various extra-curricular activities, Scotland’s independent schools have lots to offer.

This is all sounds great, right? But how do you find the right independent school for your child? That’s often the part that feels most difficult, which is understandable. It’s a big decision and one that requires careful consideration.

Choosing the right school

The first thing to remember is that you’re ideally placed to make this choice. Why is that? Because you know your child best. What are their interests? Hobbies? What do they excel at and what challenges them most?

That’s not to mention other factors that you also know best, like where you live and work, travel times you’re willing to accept, and whether you want your child to board or attend as a day student.

You can use all of this knowledge to help guide your decision.

A quick internet search should offer lots of different independent schools. Get in touch with the schools individually to find out more about fees, entry requirements (if applicable) and qualifications on offer. It’s a great place to start!

You can also check out the Scottish Council of Independent Schools – a charity representing independent schools across Scotland – for more information and guidance.

Why not also reach out to other parents of students at schools you’re considering? Or see if your trusted friends and family members have any recommendations?

Once you’ve narrowed down a list of potential options, tours or open days are a great way of seeing which school feels right.

You can get a sense of the atmosphere, have a look around, meet key staff and have a chat. Many schools even offered virtual open days during lockdowns, so don’t be afraid to reach out and see how you can find out more.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding the right independent school for your child, so take your time and enjoy the process. Once your child is settled into their new class, it will be worth the effort.
