UK car clubbers speeding in Spain

-

Police stopped 11 people from the UK for speeding after they allegedly turned a Spanish motorway into a racing track.

The motorists were intercepted on the A-62 near Fuentes de Onoro in the western province of Salamanca as they crossed Spain towards Lisbon.

Local reports say the Brits, said to have been identified as members of a car club, were caught doing speeds of up to 140mph, which is nearly double the Spanish motorway speed limit of just over 74mph.

Nine unnamed Britons are said to have been caught doing between 108mph and 130mph.

Another two are facing a court probe after being recorded at 137mph and 140mph on the Spanish motorway.

They are thought to have reached Spain via the northern port city of Santander by car ferry.

They were stopped by Civil Guard traffic patrols at 10am on Wednesday.

The motorists were said to be at the wheels of Nissan GT-R Nismos which have 600-horsepower engines, a top speed of 195mph and can do 0-60 in less than three seconds.

Police sources told local media they suspected the drivers were going faster than they were actually clocked at certain points on the motorway.
