Hawaii to axe stairway to heaven

-

Officials in Hawaii have announced plans to spend £730,000 removing a mountain trail known as the Stairway to Heaven after its popularity on social media attracted thousands of trespassers.

Tens of thousands of people have climbed the Ha’iku Stairs, nearly 4,000 steps across Oahu’s Ko’olau mountain range, since the US Navy built the trail in the Second World War to provide access to a now-closed radio relay station.

Honolulu mayor Rick Blangiardi said: “We recognise the interest the stairs have; however, issues such as trespassing, personal injuries, invasive species and safety of the public cannot be ignored.”

Officials say the controversial work to remove the stairs could start next year.
