IRA claims responsibility for pub blast
“A statement purporting to come from the official wing of the IRA in Londonderry last night claimed responsibility for yesterday’s explosion at a bar in the city,” reported The Post on the Troubles.
The story ran below a picture of the funeral of two men who had been killed in a separate blast days earlier.
“Five unexploded bombs were found in buildings in Belfast City Centre yesterday. A police spokesman said that in the interests of safety three bombs had to be detonated where they were found. One damaged a public house in Union Street, and another an office block in Donegal Street.
“An Army patrol came under fire in Londonderry, but the four bursts of automatic fire in Foyle Road all missed. Earlier three soldiers were slightly injured in incidents in the city and CS gas was fired at stone-throwing crowds.”
