BOROUGHMUIR BEARS 17 AYRSHIRE BULLS 27

They didn’t quite reach the levels of fluidity we’ve seen from them in recent weeks, but Ayrshire Bulls managed to find a way to secure a bonus-point win over Boroughmuir Bears at Meggetland to keep the pressure on Southern Knights at the top of the Super6 table, writes DAVID

BARNES.

It was 10-10 at half-time, with Bears’ points having come from a Kaleem Barreto try plus a conversion and penalty for Tom Pittman, while flanker Yaree Fantini had scored two unconverted tries from line-out mauls for the Bulls.

The visitors pulled away after the break with Michael Scott getting try number three following another line-out maul, then replacement winger Finlay Callaghan going under the posts with his first touch of the ball.

Callaghan crossed the whitewash again to complete his team’s scoring, while Bears grabbed a consolation try with the last play of the match, finished off by Michael Jones after some excellent build-up play from 18-year-old centre Duncan Munn and Trystan Andrews.

“We won with a bonus point away from home, so well done, butaswegrowasateamour expectations for individual and

collective performance grow with us,” said Bulls head coach Pat Macarthur.

Bulls host the Knights this coming Friday night knowing that a win will put them top of the table.

“Maybe it’s not a bad thing that a few things didn’t click if it means we go away and work harder this week with a six-day turnaround,” added Macarthur.

Bears head coach Graham Shiel was philosophical about his team’s sixth defeat in their eighth game so far this season.

“We made some critical errors again today,” he lamented. “We

get into good positions but didn’t capitalise.”

Stirling County host Watsonians in the final match of this eighth round of Super6 matches at Bridgehaugh this afternoon.

In the Premiership, Marr’s 22-0 victory at GHA saw them climb to the top of the table, ahead of Currie Chieftains whose game was called off due to a Covid outbreak in the Selkirk team.

Glasgow Hawks’ 43-19 home win over Musselburgh and Edinburgh Accies’ 42-29 defeat of Hawick sees that pair climb

to third and fourth in the league, respectively.

At the bottom of the table, Jedforest came out on top of a 39-56

thriller at Aberdeen Grammar.
