Sputnik, the world’s first satelite, is launched into space by the USSR.

It orbits the earth for three weeks before its batteries die, and another two months before falling back into the atmosphere. Its success triggered the Space Race, part of the Cold War, and a new era of political, military, technologi­cal and scientific developmen­ts.
