Hero saves drowning teenager

-

“The plucky rescue of a young Carnbuslang woman from the River Clyde provided an exciting scene this morning,” read The Post.

“Mary Lavery (19), was seen struggling in the water at a point between the Orion Bridge and the Clyde Valley Electrical Power Works, and the alarm was raised.

“John Sweeney, an ex-soldier who immediately divested himself of his jacket and vest, dived into the water, and, swimming to the other side, reached the girl, who appeared to be going down for the last time. With considerable difficulty, Sweeney brought his charge safely to the Cambuslang bank.

“She was in a very exhausted condition, but made a speedy recovery. On the arrival of the police the girl was taken to the Cambuslang Police Station, and was handed over to the care of her father.”
