Easy victory, then boxing champion throws in the towel on US tour

“Tommy Milligan Surprise,” read the headline about a story on the champion boxer.

“Great surprise has been occasioned in the West of Scotland boxing circles by the news that Tommy Milligan is returning home, having fought only one match in the United States.

“The account of his easy victory in New York over Norry Schlaefer led his admirers to expect that he would have a successful tour on the other side, but this hope has been dashed. There is much speculation as to what can have induced him to give up the tour.”

Milligan went on to challenge for the middleweight world title. He died in 1970.
