Dykes makes his mark ahead of Israel

-

It was a relatively quiet day for the Scotland players involved in their last game before the World Cup showdown against Israel.

The only man to really make his mark was QPR striker, Lyndon Dykes.

He scored and set up Ilias Chair for the winner in his side’s 3-2 win over Preston to move them into the top-six in the Championship.

Leading the way in the division are Bournemouth, with former Celt Ryan Christie teeing up Philip Billing for the decider in their 2-1 win at home to Sheffield United.

And Scott Mckenna played his part in Nottingham Forest’s thumping 3-0 win away to Birmingham City.

In the Premier League, Kieran Tierney played the full game for Arsenal at Brighton, which must have been a bit of a soulless experience as it was a drab goalless draw in heavy rain.

Scott Mctominay got 90 minutes for Manchester United against Everton, unlike Cristiano Ronaldo, who had to wait 57 minutes to make his introduction.

It was to little avail as Andros Townsend grabbed a point for the Toffees after Anthony Martial had put the hosts ahead to leave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side’s sitting third.

Chelsea went top of the table with a 3-1 victory at home to Southampton, where Stuart Armstrong was an unused sub.

After Trevoh Chalobah had put the Blues ahead, it took late strikes from Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell to secure the points after James Ward-prowse had equalised with a penalty.

While his parent club were doing that, Billy Gilmour – on loan at Norwich City – spent the 90 minutes on the bench as Grant Hanley and Kenny Mclean helped the Canaries take their first point of the season with a goal-less draw at Burnley.

Leeds United secured their first league win of the season, beating Watford 1-0 with Diego Llorente getting the goal.

The Hornets thought they had equalised when home keeper, Illan Meslier, dropped a corner-kick and the ball deflected into the net. However, referee Simon Hooper had blown for a foul on Scotland defender, Liam Cooper.

There was further misery for Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce – and unused sub Ryan Fraser – as his side lost 2-1 at Wolves.

The hosts took the lead through Hwang Hee-chan’s smart finish. The Magpies equalised through Jeff Hendrick, but Hwang restored the lead with the winner in the 58th minute.
