Garden of the week
The gardens surrounding the Burns Monument in Alloway are filled with many flowers, including the red roses that the national poet immortalised in song.
This south-facing spot, overlooking the Brig O’doon, is dominated by the monument itself, which has recently been restored. A path leads from the gardens to the Burns Museum where the naturalistic planting includes broad sweeps of heather beneath glades of silver birch.
