Potting Shed

Welcome to my potting shed! This is the column where I’ll share all my gardening hints and tips – and I’ll try to answer any queries you may have.

I tried to cut back a large cotoneaster but it has thrown up dozens of new shoots. How do I keep it small? – R Bell, by email

I don’t think you can. This shrub has a huge and vigorous root system, so if you are growing it in a confined area then it might be better to remove it.

Can I use weedkiller on brambles that are growing through my flower beds? – Sandra Robertson, Eaglesham

Even if you spot-treated the brambles very carefully then some weedkiller would inevitably end up on your flowers, so I think you are going to have to remove those before tackling the brambles.

Is it too late to sow sweetpeas for next year? – Jenna Sawyer, Bishopbriggs

There’s still time. Plant them now, three seeds to a small pot, and keep them in a cold frame over winter.

Can you tell me the name of the tall yellow flower in my neighbour’s garden? – Brian Hodge, Dunfermline

This is solidago or ‘Golden Rod’. It’s a useful plant for late summer but it can become invasive if planted in rich soil.

Will my parsley survive the winter in the garden? – Derek Fraser, Inverurie

You can protect your parsley with a cloche and it should survive. You can also dig some up and keep it on a bright windowsill indoors.
