What’s the story behind A Farewell To Arms? – L
Paramount Pictures paid $80,000 for the rights to Ernest Hemingway’s 1929 novel set on the Italian front during the First World War. Hemingway disliked the big-screen version but nonetheless became close friends with Gary Cooper (Lieutenant Frederic Henry), who starred opposite Helen Hayes (Catherine Barkley). The author later insisted Cooper should be cast in the adaptation of another of his novels, For Whom the Bell Tolls.
