OCTOBER 21, 1805

Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson’s British fleet defeats Napoleon Bonaparte’s combined French and Spanish fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar, off the coast of Spain.

Lord Nelson died during the naval battle but was commemorated with a lavish funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, and Nelson’s Column was erected in the newly named Trafalgar Square in 1843.
