Glass : I won’t last long if we don’t win games

- By Scott Davie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Stephen Glass admits his future in the job is far from secure after last night’s defeat at Dens Park made it 10 games without a win under his charge.

Glass was the personal choice of chairman Dave Cormack to replace Derek Mcinnes in the post last season.

The Dons were never out of the top four in the league during the seven years Mcinnes was in charge of the club.

However they are now stuck in ninth place after nine games and on their worst start to a league campaign since Craig Brown was in charge.

That team finished in the bottom six that season and the Aberdeen fans who were chanting for Mcinnes to go earlier this year were calling for his replacement’s head during this first defeat against Dundee in 17 meetings.

Glass understands their anger and is honest enough to know that even the backing of Cormack, who is a personal friend from their time together in Atlanta, can’t be guaranteed for long.

“I totally understand it,” Glass said. “I can see why there might not be a bit of belief in us as a staff and that group of players. But that group of players are capable of winning football matches.

“We’ve been severely, severely punished with the opportunities we’ve given up. But, again, the reality of managing football clubs like this is you don’t last very long if you can’t win games.

“I am the front man for that and bear the brunt for it. I understand, but I back myself and the group of players.

“We’ve been backed so far. Results like this... you don’t know what is going to happen.”

Goalkeeping coach Gordon Marshall can expect a one-game ban for the visit of Hibs next week after being red-carded late in the game along with Dundee manager James Mcpake.

But it’s more discipline and commitment from the Aberdeen players that is most important for Glass if he is going to win matches and win over the supporters in the weeks ahead.

He added:”we didn’t take the right options at the top end of the pitch and we were too easy to score against.

“When players are making poor decisions, they cost you games. It’s important it changes quickly otherwise there will be a continuation of this.”
