I sorted a Will – and now I can focus on my son’s care

-

One of the top reasons people put off organising their Wills and Powers of Attorney is that they don’t want to think about a situation where they can’t make decisions for themselves or aren’t around anymore.

But taking the time now to put everything in place can save a lot of last-minute scrambling should the worst happen, as Simon Oates has recently found out.

The retired 81-year-old from Paisley organised his Will last year with the help of the team at ILAWS.

“It was something I had been thinking about doing for a while and then it was February or March last year we had them made.”

With the documents prepared, Simon, like the rest of us, turned his attention to the pandemic and staying as healthy as possible.

However, earlier this year Simon and his family received the shocking news that his son Owen, 51, was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“It was a complete shock – he went in because of his back and that’s when they found it. I’ve really only been half of myself since we got the news.”

Simon’s now devoting himself fully to looking after his son – and one part that he doesn’t need to think about is his Will.

“Everything was signed and sealed – I had a quick call with George at ILAWS just to check everything was okay, but that was all.

“It means I can focus on him and not on doing paperwork.”

For Simon, that peace of mind and knowing everything has already been taken care of is one less stress at an already very stressful and emotional time.
