Mouat and team are on course to make it a hat-trick
Edinburgh curler Bruce Mouat and his team stayed on course for a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles after edging out Ross Whyte in an all-scottish quarterfinal at The Masters in Oakville, Ontario, last night.
Mouat and his colleagues Hammy Mcmillan, Bobby Lammie and Grant Hardie won the Champions Cup and Players Championship back in April and were unbeaten in their previous 13 Grand Slam games.
They had also defeated Whyte’s rink 4-0 in Switzerland earlier this month, and although last night’s rematch proved closer, Mouat and company always held a slight edge.
A steal at the fourth end put them 3-1 up at halfway and they then forced Whyte to blank the fifth end and settle for single stone at the sixth.
Team Mouat eventually prevailed 4-2.
They will now face Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher in the semis after the Canadian
stunned Swedish world champion Niklas Edin 5-3.
Meanwhile, Hugh Nibloe’s Scotland team overcame Norway 6-4 in their opening match at the Wheelchair World Championships in Beijing yesterday.
“It really was a game of two halves,” joked Nibloe after recovering from 4-2 down halfway through the match.
