Marr’s title hopes remain on course

-

Marr kept their Premiership title challenge on track with a bonus-point 38-14 home win over Edinburgh Accies yesterday afternoon, writes DAVID BARNES.

With a strong wind at their backs, the Fullarton Park men raced into a 17-0 half-time lead thanks to tries from Curran Mcmillan, Jack Scott and David Andrews.

Accies did not makes as good use of the breeze in the second half, and allowed Colin Sturgeon in for Marr’s bonus-point try five minutes after the restart.

The visitors did manage to narrow the gap to 10 points through tries by Ru Campbell and Robbie Kent, both converted by Ben Appleson – but the hosts stretched away again during the final 10 minutes with scores from Stephen Adair and Jamie Shedden.

“I thought we in were complete control, the interception try we conceded midway through the second half gave them a wee sniff, so there were a few mistakes in there, but I’m reasonably happy,” said victorious head coach Craig Redpath.

“It was tough conditions with the wind, but the boys did well. We scored a few good tries and left two or three more out there. We’re getting there slowly but surely.

“It’s Hawick away next, which is a huge game, they’ve not lost at home, then we’ve got Hawks away, which will be tough as well, so two big matches coming up.

Meanwhile, Marr’s three closest challengers at the top of the table kept the pressure on with Currie Chieftains picking up a 35-17 win away to Jed-forest, Hawick running out 46-29 winners at Musselburgh, and Glasgow Hawks beating Selkirk 40-26 at home, having raced into a 33-0 half-time lead.
