A goal every week is now the target for Giakoumakis

Giorgos Giakoumakis is dreaming of a season filled with silverware after grabbing his first goal for Celtic.

The Greek, a £2.5 million summer signing from the Dutch club VVV Venlo, netted on what was his first start to set his team on the road to their victory over St Johnstone.

“It was a beautiful moment,” said the 26-year-old who scored an impressive 26 goals in 30 appearances in the Eredivisie last season.

“It was a feeling I was looking forward to enjoying and I am really, really happy just now.

“When I was asked to come here I decided immediately yes because this team has a really good plan. I did not see even 1% risk.

“It is an attacking team, we try to play with an offensive style of game. This for sure will help me to score goals and to win some trophies.

“The level of my teammates is really high and I am really happy that I am here. I believe we can achieve many things together.

“I want to stay healthy until the end and help my team victories and get some trophies.

“After that, I am a striker and my goal is to score every week.”

The Greek was substituted an hour into yesterday’s win but insists he is close to catching up to 100% fitness following his move.

“Yes, from now on I can say that if I am needed I am ready. I am getting closer and closer, game by game,” he said.

“I think with one or two more matches I will be there.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was delighted to see his new signing get off the mark, arguing it would be important for the player’s mentality.

“You know what strikers are like, there is no striker in the world who feels good unless he is scoring goals,” he said.

“That particularly applies when you come to a new club and a new environment.

“For me, whether he scored or not wasn’t going to be as important.

“But I know for him getting that goal is going to be pleasing and hopefully he can build from there.

“You can never be overloaded with options but it’s great to see we have those options in attack now.”

A fresh one being the fit-again Mikey Johnston.

“I was really pleased to see Mikey back because he looked really good in pre-season,” said the Celtic boss.

“I know how talented he is but the key for him was to get his body healthy and be really patient with him.

“He is now getting more game time and he is a talented player. The way we play I know he can have a huge impact.”
