Ayr United boss Jim Duffy was relieved to escape from windswept Gayfield with a hard-earned point after holding off a spirited Arbroath side which continues to belie its part-time status by occupying a lofty position in the Championship.

Michael Mckenna gave the Lichties a deserved lead shortly after the interval when he prodded the ball beyond Aidan Mcangus.

But “super sub” Jonathan Afolbi blasted home the equaliser 10 minutes from time when he got on the end of fellow sub Michael Moffat’s attempted shot.

Duffy said: “I am delighted with a point. Arbroath were the better side for most of the game although we came more into it over the closing stages. We had to defend well and stay focused.

“We kept Arbroath at bay by tackling, heading and blocking well – all the

things that please you as a coach. And our keeper made a fantastic save to keep us in it in the second half.”
