THE SCOTS MAGAZINE

- Robert Wight, The Scots Magazine editor

One of the films I loved best when I was wee was The Eiger Sanction. Clint Eastwood is a former assassin who comes out of retirement for one last hit and must figure out who the baddie is during an attempt on the north face of the formidable Swiss peak.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s kind of like a James Bond movie, but with climbing. I watched it again quite recently and it was still great!

I remember learning that the actual climbing in the film was carried out by the Scottish mountaineer Hamish Macinnes – the Fox of Glencoe. Last year, Hamish died aged 90

– a long life, well lived. His final book – an autobiography – has just been published and in his column this month, Cameron Mcneish writes fondly of Hamish’s incredible life.

Elsewhere in the magazine, you’ll find a fascinating interview with Scotland’s King of Tartan Noir, Ian Rankin. In the Around Scotland and Focus On sections, you’ll get all the inspiration you need to plan the best family days out this October. Have a happy Halloween!
