Tony is feeling the love - and the hunger – again

The Premiership’s new top scorer, Tony Watt, says he is feeling the love for football again – but isn’t counting on a Scotland call up any time soon.

The Motherwell striker netted his ninth goal of the season to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Hibs at Easter Road.

And with Hibs scorer Kevin Nisbet, one of the Scotland group looking forward to a World Cup play-off next March, the 27-year-old was not surprised to be asked if his ambitions stretched to playing for the country.

“People always say that to me when I am doing well,” he smiled.

“But look they are in the World Cup playoffs so they are doing something right.

“Steve Clarke has enough options as is. You saw how Che Adams played for us against Denmark.

“You can’t really complain when you see that performance.

“I was sitting in the house saying that I understand why he has picked him.

“I am happy I am enjoying football again. There have been times in my life when I have hated it and there have been times when I have been happy and confident.

“Now I have got the love back so I am going to try and prolong my career as long as possible.

“If I do that then, who knows, maybe in the next 10 years I can get in there.

“For now Scotland are not doing anything wrong so if that stays the same way then I won’t have one bad feeling towards him.”

Watt’s tally of nine league goals is already his best for a campaign and he sees no reason why it should not continue.

“I have always been a reasonably decent finisher but before I was probably happy enough to do my work outside the box,” he said.

“I wasn’t as hungry or greedy perhaps, but now I am shooting more and they are going in.

“I know I can score, I know I can hit the shots and do all the things a striker can do.

“It is just about really proving to people what I have always believed which is that I am a good player and that when my mind is at it I can do whatever I want.

“I had missed one earlier on but even the very best players don’t score from every chance. If you did that, you would be playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“If I get five shots in a game then I am walking away happy.”
