Mackay hails positives after crushing blow

- By Darren Johnstone SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Ross County boss Malky Mackay admits he was happy to take a point back to Dingwall – despite losing a crushing late equaliser at Livingston.

The Staggies led through David Canola’s stunning effort in first half injury-time.

But they eventually caved in to incessant Lions’ pressure when Ayo Obileye headed home a 89th minute goal.

Victory would have lifted County out of the relegation zone ahead of Wednesday’s crucial battle against fellow basement battlers St Johnstone.

But on the back of a draining clash with Celtic in midweek, Mackay insists a draw is not the worst result.

He said: “I’m disappointed to lose the last minute goal. On the bigger reflection, a point away from home is a good point and knowing we can score against teams.

“I believe we’ve not won here in eight or nine years so it was never going to be an easy place to come.

“Off the back of Wednesday night (against Celtic) when so much energy was put into that, if you’re a half yard short here you are going to get beat because Davie’s teams run hard.

“They have also won their last couple of games.

“If I look at all that in perspective I’m delighted with the team, we had two great chances in the second half, Obileye’s block and Ross Callachan’s effort could have a made a difference.”

Mackay, meanwhile, paid tribute to goal scorer David Cancola after the Austrian scored his first goal for the club with a sublime 30-yard effort that found the top corner.

He added: “I’m delighted for David because he is a terrific young man.

“He’s got a real mature head on his Austrian’s shoulders.

“His journey to come here was quite protracted with the whole visa thing.

“He is technically a lovely footballer and the goal was a real shot in the arm for us.

“He’s just needed to get up to the speed of the Premiership, it was getting him up to speed really.”
