PARTICK THISTLE 1

Turner (90+5) RAITH ROVERS 0

-

Thick fog made it almost impossible to see as Thistle grabbed a dramatic winner five minutes into stoppage time to move three points off the top of the table.

Jags’ midfielder Scott Tiffoney crossed from the left for Ross Maciver to head down into the path of substitute Kyle Turner to ram a left-foot volley high into the net in the 95th minute.

Jags head coach Ian Mccall said: “It should have been far more comfortable than it was. We missed way too many chances. Raith are a right good side, but I thought we were dominant.”

Thistle, now with just one loss in their last 11 matches in all events, almost went ahead in the first minute when Tunji Akinola’s free-kick was headed on by Lewis Mayo but Scott Tiffoney’s shot slipped wide.

The Kirkcaldy side, previously unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competitions since the end of September, came close in 13 minutes when Aidan Connolly fired in a 25-yard free-kick, but it drifted off target.

Thistle piled on the pressure as the fog enveloped Firhill and in 22 minutes Rovers goalkeeper Jamie Mcdonald pulled off a sensational fingertip save from a Ross Docherty header.

Rovers continued to withstand an onslaught from the Jags and in 25 minutes Kevin Holt saw his shot rebound off the underside of the bar and Graham followed up to drill the rebound wide.

Thistle dominated the first period and passed up another chance in 41 minutes when Zak Rudden burst in from the right but his shot was deflected wide by Kyle Benedictus.

Rovers were reduced to 10 men on the hour mark when Christophe Berra was shown a red card for a high challenge on Cammy Smith.

Rovers’ goal came under further siege in 67 minutes when Turner’s 12-yard shot was blocked by Macdonald. And Turner missed an even better chance when he scooped the ball over from eight yards three minutes from the end, before finally snatching the winner.

Rovers boss Mcglynn said: “The guys battled so hard. It’s the end of our long unbeaten run. A massive thanks to our fans who backed the team. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a result for them.

“I thought the red card was a horrendous decision. He could hardly see the players let alone what happened. Christophe pulled out of the tackle.

“Deep down, I can hardly deny Thistle the win.”
