Lampard rages after Toffees denied penalty

-

Furious Everton boss Frank Lampard blasted VAR official Chris Kavanagh as “incompetent at best” after his side were denied a late penalty in the 1-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Phil Foden’s 82nd-minute goal was shortly followed by the ball striking the arm of midfielder Rodri.

Referee Paul Tierney had not given a decision on the pitch and VAR official Kavanagh ruled there was no reason to change that.

“There is no doubt, there is no probably to it,” said Lampard on whether his side should have been awarded a spot-kick. “The decision is incredible. Incredible, and that loses us the opportunity to get what we deserved.

“That’s a VAR call. That’s Chris Kavanagh. We’ve lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right.”

Newcastle continued their climb away from trouble with a 2-0 win at 10-man Brentford – a game which saw Christian Eriksen make his return to action.

After 11 minutes, Brentford’s Josh Dasilva was sent off for a reckless challenge on Matt Targett and 20

minutes later, Joelinton headed in and Joe Willock sealed the win. Eriksen came on to make his Bees bow in the second half, 259 days after collapsing while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

Burnley followed up back-to-back wins over Brighton and Tottenham with a battling 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Jeffrey Schlupp had poked Palace ahead just nine minutes, but an own goal from Luka Milivojevic 40 seconds into the second half earned the Clarets another valuable point.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min created Premier League history as Tottenham thrashed Leeds 4-0.

Kane and Son combined for a 37th time when Kane set up Son’s 85th-minute goal, breaking the record held by Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba for Chelsea.

It followed first-half goals from Matt Doherty, Dejan Kulusevski and Kane.

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Watford, while goals from Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins gave Aston Villa a 2-0 success at Brighton.

Chelsea will face Liverpool in today’s Carabao Cup final, 24 hours after owner, Russian Roman Abramovich,

announced he was handing stewardship of the club to its charitable foundation.

The news is in the wake of his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
