Sub’s red card leads to Cove snatching a draw

-

Right on half-time, Montrose took the lead and, again, Gardyne was involved, with his corner finding Quinn and this time his header flew into the net.

Twenty minutes into the restart, Queen’s opened up the visiting defence when Luca Connell released Tommy Robson, with Aaron Lennox doing well to clutch his low drive.

A minute later, Connor Smith was inches out for the hosts when he charged forward and sent in a 30-yarder that had beaten Lennon all ends up.

Charlie Fox tried his luck for the Spiders with an 18-yard drive that was blocked at the expense of a corner that Michael Doyle should have scored from, but he headed over.

The hosts knew it was not going to be their day when Connell curled a 25-yard free-kick off target and Jai Quitongo had a fierce shot pushed past by Lennox.

FALKIRK 3 EAST FIFE 1

Maverick striker Leigh Griffiths notched his first goal for Falkirk as the Bairns scored twice at the death to reignite their stuttering promotion challenge.

In truth, his penalty deep into stoppage-time merely added some gloss to a result which flattered the home side.

The late goal that mattered even more was Paul Watson’s 89th-minute header as Falkirk completed a hat-trick of victories over bottom of the table East Fife and finally posted their first home win since early last month. More importantly, they now trail Queen’s Park only on goal difference in the race for the final promotion play-off spot in League 1.

Few could have predicted the late drama to come when Falkirk went ahead after only 16 minutes through Craig Mcguffie.

The lead lasted barely nine minutes, however, as Ryan Wallace found the top corner with a sweet right-foot drive.

East Fife enjoyed dominant spells on either side of half-time, but were then forced to mount a late rearguard action which looked set to earn them a point until Watson’s header denied them.

AIRDRIEONIANS 1 CLYDE 1

Clyde should have opened the scoring in five minutes when an Ally Love cross from the left was headed against the crossbar by Lewis Jamieson.

Airdrie had a penalty shouts waved aside on the half-hour after Adam Frizzell was fouled inside the box, and again after Jon Afolabi was brought down by Josh Bradley-hurst.

In 42 minutes, though, a loose ball fell nicely for Jamieson and he powered a shot into the net past keeper Max Currie into the net.

Substitute Gabby Mcgill bagged the equaliser with 15 minutes remaining after he got on the end of a well-taken free-kick by Rhys Mccabe.
