Gerrard warns off Gers over young striker

- By Ewing Grahame SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Steven Gerrard won’t allow England Under-21 striker, Cameron Archer, to join Rangers on loan next season.

And the former Ibrox boss is also set to price the player out of a permanent move to Scotland.

The 20-year-old scored four goals in five appearances for Aston Villa last season, and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Preston, where he notched seven times in 18 Championship starts.

West Brom are among the clubs interested in the youngster, but Gerrard wants to give Archer the chance to force his way into his first team.

The Villa boss said: “Preston manager Ryan Lowe phoned me and asked for him back next season,”

“I told him to tell his chairman to get his noughts out if he’s wanting him on a full-time basis.

“He won’t be available for a loan because I want more options in the No 9 position.”

■ Kilmarnock manager Derek Mcinnes has made Fraser Stewart his new goalkeeper coach at Rugby Park.

Stewart leaves his position as head of goalkeeping at the Scottish FA, which included working with the Under-21s and Women’s team.

Mcinnes had been looking for a new specialist coach for his shotstoppers after Colin Doyle returned south of the border earlier this month to join Bradford City.

■ Former Hearts winger Sam Nicholson has returned to Colorado Rapids on a two-and-a-half year deal after leaving Bristol Rovers.

The 27-year-old quit Tynecastle for the MLS in 2017 when he joined Minnesota United before moving to Colorado 12 months later.

■ Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has ended speculation about his future by signing a new long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The 23-year-old, who has been with the Gunners since the age of 14, had been in the final few weeks of his previous deal.

The Gunners have also confirmed Nketiah will take the No. 14 shirt, recently vacated by Pierre-emerick Aubameyang and previously worn by record goalscorer Thierry Henry

■ Former Hearts, Motherwell and Inverness Caley Thistle striker Jordan Roberts has joined Stevenage.

The 28-year-old signed for the Jambos two years ago but failed to make the expected impact at Tynecastle and was farmed out to Motherwell just six months later.

He again joined the Steelmen on loan last season before making the move permanent in January. But he left Fir Park at the end of the campaign.

■ England defender Lucy Bronze has joined Barcelona Women after signing a two-year deal.
