Supporters hail first pro player to come out

- By Bob Geddes news@sundaypost.com

Gala Fairydean Rovers striker Zander Murray scored his side’s only goal yesterday, the day after becoming the first Scottish senior footballer to come outasgay.

He is the first openly gay professional in Scotland since Justin Fashanu played for Airdrie and Hearts in the 1990s.

Murray has been supported by club officials, teammates and fans who gave him a huge cheer when he scored yesterday although it was not enough to stop his side crashing out of the Scottish Cup to Sauchie Juniors.

Murray, 30, said he came out because he wanted to help other players who were struggling with their sexuality.

He said it felt like a weight off his shoulders, adding: “I put a post on my social media telling folk I was gay. I didn’t need to sit the boys down in the changing room and tell them. The lads at the club have been so supportive. I have a really strong bond with everyone at the club and I have been blown away by the support.

“Before coming out you think people will turn against you and you think the worst. It’s been lovely how much support I have had.

“There are gay footballers in our game and I have had lots of players get in touch saying they have read my post and they can’t believe how strong I am by doing this.”

Club secretary Robert Fairbairn said: “Zander got his 100th goal in his first game since he came out. He’s a brave guy and he had a couple of chances today but Sauchie were deserved winners. It was a good reception for him.”

Club chairperson, Ryan Cass, said: “Everyone at the club is fully supportive of Zander and we are delighted for him that he feels comfortable to come out.

“Zander has shown great bravery and he has the club’s full support and I am certain that he will get the support he deserves from all across the football family in Scotland.”
