The Tudor Coffee House

4A Common Green, Strathaven

-

What goes up must come down, as they say.

Sadly, I’m not referring to the current soaring energy prices, who knows if they will come back down?

I’m in the Tudor Coffee House located in the picturesque South Lanarkshire village of Strathaven, admiring the cafe’s cute candy-striped paper hot air balloons that hang from the ceiling.

Strathaven is famous for its annual balloon festival where hot air balloons ascend from the local park and drift across the skies in a rainbow of colour.

I’m a day late for the spectacle – and just as well as I’d probably never have gotten a table during the popular event – but not to worry, as it’s the thought of a scone and a cuppa that has me floating among the clouds today.

As I await my order, I admire the rest of the decor, which includes lovely pictures of the coffee house.the Tudor Coffee House sits, as its name suggests, within an original black and white Tudor House with exposed black beams on the outside and a gable roof, making it an iconic part of the village.

Inside, it’s small but cosy with space for about seven tables and another few outside. It has a warm, friendly atmosphere. I find myself striking up a conversation with a lovely lady at the next table about how much she enjoyed seeing the balloons from her garden. I’m determined to make next year’s event.

My food arrives andituckintoa delicious sweet chilli chicken toasted wrap served with coleslaw and crisps while my companion enjoys her baked potato filled with prawn Marie rose.

My friend orders my scone for me while I’m taking a call outside, so I’m a bit confused when it arrives plain, toasted with butter. I don’t have the heart to bother our busy server for my usual jam and cream.after an indulgent lunch, it’s actually a nice balm to have something that isn’t overly sweet but still light and crumbly. The butter melts into the scone to make it rich and comforting.

With tasty food served in a friendly atmosphere and a beautiful location, this place definitely floats my boat. Or should that be balloon?
