1 Keela Women’s Trail Short Sleeve Top £29.95

This T-shirt has served me well on various hikes, gentle walks and even a couple of runs and gym days. The brand says it’s the ideal first layer for hikers, mountaineers and anyone who needs a wicking base layer – and I’m inclined to agree. The fabric is especially breathable and lightweight, which has been a real relief in the summer, and I reckon would work well under more layers in the winter. Polygiene Viraloff™ treatment is another interesting feature. This kills viruses to protect the fabric, and has an antibacterial component to destroy odour-causing bacteria – keeping you fresher for longer.

2. Montane Women’s Dyno Stretch Shorts, £60

For fast-paced days on the hills these shorts are fantastic. They’re created with Montane’s Granite Stretch Lite material, which is highly durable while maintaining excellent stretchability for ease of movement. It’s water repellent and wind resistant, too, which is ideal for running through occasional showers, without having to layer up. I love this longer length of short and active cut for hiking – great for fast highstep movements – and the wellappointed zipped hip pockets and left thigh pocket are perfect for keeping your smart phone, snacks and car keys safely tucked away.

3. Jack Wolfskin Pack & Go Windshell, £65

Having extra windproof and rainproof layers is essential when enjoying the outdoors in Scotland. This extremely light jacket, weighing in at just 120g, stows down so small into its own pocket and covers you for both windchill and showers. It has been really handy for popping in my work bag for going to and from the office or in my handbag on a night out – as you never know what the weather will do! The material is so soft, it’s almost like silk on your skin, yet is highly durable and tear-resistant. The dark blue jacket has two hand pockets and useful reflective detailing.

4. EDZ Womens 200gsm Merino Wool Vest, £29.99

As the temperature drops and the need for layering up increases, this merino wool vest from EDZ is the perfect first layer. It is so soft next to my skin and is warmer than cotton or synthetic fabrics. The merino wool is a natural climate control material – it wicks and absorbs moisture, but will keep you warm even when damp! The vest can be worn for many days before needing a wash, as the wool has excellent anti-odour properties – this is particularly useful if you are travelling or taking part in multi-day events. With a reasonable price tag, I’d highly recommend it. It will definitely be a staple in my winter wardrobe this year.
