Robinson rues gers’ penalty as Saints boss expected to hold out

- By Brian Fowlie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Stephen Robinson felt the only way Rangers could score against his team was from the penalty spot.

The St Mirren boss meant that as a compliment to his side’s defending, but it also summed up the lack of a threat from Gio van Bronckhorst’s team.

He said: We are disappointed not to take all three points. That shows how far we have come.

“I thought we sat back a little after going ahead and that is the eighth penalty against us in 15 games. But it was a penalty and I have no complaints. That is what VAR is for.

“But I didn’t see them scoring any other way. I thought we were great defensively and very good on the break as well.

“We just felt that physically we could dominate them and we did. That is our eighth game unbeaten at home which is fantastic.”

Robinson reckons midfielder Ethan Erhahon has the ability to play for either of the Old Firm sides.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

The Buddies boss said: “The midfield were excellent.

“Ethan Erhahon. He should be playing for Rangers or Celtic.

“Mark O’hara has been terrific and that’s why I have made him captain. He epitomises what we do.

“I’m singling Mark out but I don’t have a minute’s hassle from anyone in or out of the team.”

The Buddies’ boss smiled when asked if he might be leaving to take the vacant manager’s job at Luton Town.

He said: “I wouldn’t put your money on it. I am linked every time it comes up.

“They are a super football club where I have great memories as a player but there has been no contact.”

Saints scorer Jonah Ayunga admitted that he relished coming up against the inexperienced Rangers central defence.

He said: “It was a good battle. The ball was coming up to me and Main, and it was sticking.

“I think we had better chances and deserved to win the game.”

The 25-year-old was not convinced a penalty should have been awarded against them.

He added: “There’s a foul on Mark O’hara in their half that doesn’t get given and you think VAR will check that whole phase but I don’t think they did. It’s frustrating.

“It didn’t feel like 11v11 after 60 minutes. They were getting every decision, every 50-50.”

One relief for Rangers was the news that defender Leon King does not appear to be seriously injured after being stretchered off with his neck in a brace.

He was taken to hospital for a precautionary check-up.
