Location

Surrounded by stunning countryside yet within easy distance of the Granite City’s centre.

First Impressions

Built in 1881 on the site of the 15th Century Pitfodels Castle, this luxury, four-star Macdonald hotel oozes period style and elegance.

Menu

We dined in the two AA Rosette Tapestry restaurant that offers a classic Scottish menu featuring delicious dishes made from fresh seasonal ingredients as well as an impressive wine list.

Taste

Divine. While we were tempted by the wonderful starter selection (like the blue cheese mousse, wilted spinach and beetroot carpaccio), we went straight to the mains. My guest chose freerange breast of chicken, with Parma ham, truffle mash and peas a la Francaise. It was tender and melt in the mouth delicious. I selected fillet of sea trout, with spring onion crushed potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, Mediterranean vegetables and pesto. The fish was flavoursome and plentiful and worked marvellously with its accompaniments. Dessert was an equally fine affair with tonka bean panna cotta, peppered strawberries and shortbread for my guest. I chose lemon tart with Italian meringue and raspberries (below). Both were scrumptious.

Ambience

With its classic decor, roaring fire and huge bay window overlooking the garden the Tapestry restaurant offers a stylish, yet relaxed dining experience. The Home Comforts menu includes traditional favourites like crispy battered haddock and hand cut chips.

Price

At just over £100 for two including soft drinks and coffee, this isn’t dining on a budget, but it’s worth every penny.
