Lords have to go and here’s a reason why

£25 STAR LETTER

-

Thank you for putting Michelle Mone on the front page on Sunday. I don’t think her alleged conduct could be any more serious and it hasn’t had half the attention it should have.

Whatever she has done and we must eventually be told, the bigger question is what on earth she is doing in the House of Lords? What did she ever do to justify such an elevated position? It is no surprise that David Cameron put her there. He is a very shallow, foolish man.

If Labour want to make the case for abolishing the Lords, Keir Starmer should just stand up holding a picture of Michelle Mone. Lorraine Gillick, Glasgow

It’s us not him

I’ve never written a letter to a newspaper before and probably won’t write another but I’ve been reading the various letters complaining about Matt Hancock going into I’m A Celebrity and I couldn’t agree more. Why are we willing to put up with this kind of behaviour in our public life? He is what he is but why do we put up with this kind of thing. Who on earth was voting for him?

Where is Acas?

Whatever happened to the independent advisory and conciliation service Acas, which we used to read so much about? We need them to get railway workers, posties and nurses round the negotiating table to try to end the series of damaging strikes.

Oor kind of slang

Language is very important and at school we were told to speak proper English but, all over Scotland, we have our dialects which are more interesting than everyone speaking the same.

Scots language became known as slang, which actually means a secret language. It is not.

English is universal and very handy to know. However, we are becoming too American for my liking. In Oor Wullie recently someone said something was “stoopit”. What’s wrong with glaikit or even stupid?

Tributes to Doddie

I was awfully sad to hear about Doddie Weir. He was a big man in every sense and no one who ever met him seemed to have a bad word to say about him. His life was far too short but his family must take a lot of comfort from how much he was loved.

Shock at the shops

I had heard a lot about prices going up but don’t often do the shopping. I was sent to the supermarket on Sunday and got a shock. I couldn’t believe some of the prices. Three chicken breasts £15? I don’t know how folk are managing to afford everything.

A world-class cup

Like everyone, I thought the World Cup in Qatar would be a disaster. It feels like the wrong time of the year but I have to admit I’ve watched more of this one than any other. There have been some great games. B Somerville, Kirkintilloch
