QUEEN’S PARK 2

Thomas (27), Mcpake (90+1) MONTROSE 0

Queen’s Park squeezed past visitors Montrose 2-0, with the Spiders needing the heroics of goalkeeper Calum Ferrie and an injury-time goal from Josh Mcpake to see off the Gable Endies.

Ferrie made crucial stops before and after Dom Thomas’s opener, with the Spiders finally booking their place in the last eight when Mcpake ran 70 yards to score a solo effort.

Queen’s head coach Owen Coyle said: “Calum had a really good save early on and another two after that.

“That is what he is there for and the strikers are there to score goals and they did that.”

“We are in the next round and kept a clean sheet. We will accept that.”

Montrose’s Craig Brown, the grandson of the former Scotland manager of the same name, came close to scoring on eight minutes.

After seeing his initial effort blocked, the midfielder created space by slipping past two defenders and sending a shot fizzing across the Queen’s goalmouth.

Seven minutes later Brown dived to meet a curling Andrew Steeves cross six yards out and only a fine save from Ferrie kept his effort out.

Montrose came close again midway through the opening half when Rory Mcallister sent Craig Johnston through with Ferrie beating away his shot.

The opener arrived on 27 minutes when Tommy Robson won possession after seeing a shot charged down and, after his cutback was missed by Simon Murray, the ball ran to Thomas who took a touch before firing in.

Ferrie made a fine double stop five minutes from the break when he pushed out Kerr Waddell’s header and then reacted quickly to stop Mcallister’s follow-up.

Early in the second half Mcpake sent a shot against the outside of a post and Montrose should have levelled with 20 minutes left when Matthew Wright ran clear.

However, again Ferrie put up the shutters.

The visitors threw bodies forward and they were caught out as a clearance fell to Mcpake in his own half and he ran to the other end before slotting past Ross Sinclair.

Montrose manager Stewart Petrie said: “I would rather have played poorly and won 1-0.

“In cup football getting through is what matters.”
