Clyde won 4-2 on penalties

Ten-man Clyde picked up the first win of Jim Duffy’s managerial reign by keeping their nerve in the SPFL Trust Trophy penalty shoot-out.

Duffy was pleased to see his side hold out after having Andrew Rodden sent off just before the hour mark.

“It’s about winning football games and it’s been a while since we’ve done that, so even if it’s on penalties we will take it,” Duffy said.

“It was good to get a clean sheet and get through to the next round.

“The pitch was unbelievable difficult and it was a tough and competitive match against a free-scoring Elgin side.”

Elgin manager Gavin Price reflected on missed chances late in the game.

“We finished the game well and I’m pretty gutted for the players because it was a great opportunity to get into the quarter-finals that they’ve blown.”

Elgin made a good start when Kane Hester raced through on two minutes but his first shot was blocked and the striker fired the rebound straight at keeper Neil Parry.

Euan Cameron pulled his shot wide of the target with Clyde’s first chance on 15 minutes.

The Bully Wee had slightly the better of the first half on a muddy surface and Jordan Allan fired wide with the best opportunity on 35 minutes.

Clyde’s challenge took a jolt when Rodden was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Elgin captain Matthew Cooper on 56 minutes.

The visiting 10 men still had chances with both Barry Cuddihy and sub Olly Mcdonald testing home keeper Tom Mchale.

City piled on the pressure late on with top scorer Kane Hester firing into the side netting from a good position.

Russell Dingwall slipped a shot inches wide on 89 minutes, and in stoppage time Dingwall charged down a clearance and advanced to power in a shot that Neil Parry did superbly to palm away.

In the shoot-out, Parry saved from Darryl Mchardy and Fin Allen while Brian Mclean, Jordan Allan, Ray Grant and skipper Peter Grant all netted to put the Bully Wee through.
