New recruits on way but boss delighted to retain his star duo

Celtic could be on the verge of more signings, boss Brendan Rodgers hinted last night.

The Hoops have welcomed two new arrivals – Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio – since the Northern Irishman’s return.

And speaking on club’s official channels, he revealed himself to be the beneficiary of hard work already put in by his colleagues.

Work that could pay off further in the near future.

“The recruitment team had a few signings that they were well down the road with and, when I had a look at them, I was very impressed with what I saw,” said Rodgers.

“Marco (Tilio) will come in and prove to be a really good addition to the squad.

“He is fast, dynamic can play in a couple positions, and he scores goals. A young player with a very bright future and I look forward to seeing him.”

With Jota having jetted off for Saudi Arabia, the new manager has been quick to tie down a couple of his marquee talents, with Japanese pair Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda handed lucrative contract extensions.

Both deals, Rodgers argues, are great news – for him and for all Celtic supporters.

“They have been outstanding players for the club,” he said.

“I’ve always had a striker at the top of the pitch with pace and, for me, Kyogo is absolutely perfect.

“His work-rate, intensity and how he presses the game, but then his movement is that of a top forward.

“I’ve spoken to him on video and stuff, you can just get a sense of his character and mentality.

“Daizen is different from other players.

“He can play in a number of positions, and you can’t underestimate his work ethic.

“He sets the tone for the pressing, on the left-side or through the middle like he does for Japan.

“He presses and works tirelessly, and we can work with him to add more goals to his game.

“You will see him constantly improve.”

The Hoops boss has, meanwhile, expressed his wish for the support to turn out in force for long-serving winger James Forrest’s testimonial game against Athletic Bilbao at Parkhead on August 1.

“I really hope we get as many people as we can,” he said

“You don’t see it often in the modern game, someone being at the club for so long – and he’s worthy of a full stadium.

“That would be a great thing for the player from every Celtic supporter and fan.”
