Morton manager Dougie Imrie told his players they must calm down in the final third as they failed to overcome Airdrie.

Their recent revival continued by stretching their unbeaten run to four games but the Ton lacked a composed streak against Rhys Mccabe’s hosts.

Imrie refused to lay into his players too much but he did insist they were without a certain calmness which has brought them their rewards recently.

Imrie, whose side remain fifth in the table, said: “It was frustrating.

“We were good from back to middle in terms of keeping the ball but it was the final third where we let ourselves down. We didn’t do enough to cut Airdrie open.

“It was about that final ball and picking somebody out. We were slashing at things and that’s why we didn’t get our rewards. Our delivery was poor and so was our decision-making.

“We had a lot of good play but at least it’s another point that takes us in the right direction.”

It was a scrappy start from both sides amid the swirling wind although Airdrie striker Calum Gallagher did try his luck from distance midway through the first half, only to see his speculative effort clear Ryan Mullen’s crossbar.

After such an uneventful first half, things couldn’t get much worse and the visitors did begin the second half brightly.

Full-back Lewis Strapp went on a surging run from deep before setting free Robbie Crawford whose cross was deflected out for a corner.

At least it was a signal of intent from the Greenock outfit who threatened again just after the hour mark when Strapp unleashed a shot on his weaker right foot which Josh Rae gathered.

At the other end, the Diamonds did raise the hopes of their supporters in 75 minutes.

Mason Hancock’s whipped delivery from the left looked inchperfect for substitute Josh O’connor, but he just couldn’t make contact despite being at full stretch.

Airdrie boss Mccabe said: “Both sides were poor.

“It was a poor spectacle but we’ll be trying to finish the year on a high when we go to Hampden to face Queen’s Park. That’s our aim.”
