Brannan backing for Adams after Morecambe lose

- By Mark Walker SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Derek Adams’ successor at Morecambe – former Motherwell star Ged Brannan – reckons the Ross County boss didn’t mean his infamous rant last week.

And he believes the Scottish Premiership is comparable to the English Championship. Adams lashed out after a defeat to Dundee – claiming his former club were “100 times better” despite having the lowest budget in English League Two.

But the Staggies boss may want to retract that after The Shrimps were thumped 3-1 at home to MK Dons and conceded one of the worst goals you’ll see anywhere in Scotland or England this season.

He said: “Derek’s got his own opinions and he’s entitled to that. “To be honest I haven’t watched Scottish football since I left Motherwell, but when I was up there it was English Championship standard – a top league with a lot of good players.

“I think Derek just made those comments because he was angry after the game – it was just something he said. I don’t think he really means it.

“When I played up there I would say the standards between League Two and the Scottish Premiership were definitely not comparable.

“But I would say it’s probably about the English Championship level, except obviously Celtic and Rangers who are two big teams.” If Adams was appalled at the standard of his new club against Dundee, he would have been apoplectic at his former club’s defending for MK Dons’ opener when 19-year-old striker Max Dean had all the time in the world to round Morecambe keeper Adam Smith.

The hosts were level three minutes into the second half with a fine close range header from Northern Ireland Under 21s international JJ Mckiernan. Despite Morecambe dominating, the Milton Keynes side took the lead in the 69th minute through a fine strike from Joe Tomlinson.

And MK Dons’ injurytime clincher was a farce when, with two balls on the pitch, it seemed to confuse the Morecambe defence and they somehow managed to tee up Dean who couldn’t believe his luck and easily scored with almost the last kick of the game.

The truth was this was actually a decent encounter that had plenty of excitement, a few pieces of excellent skill and a couple of Sunday League moments. Yesterday’s defeat meant Morecambe plummeted to 12th in League Two. As for 100 times better than County... definitely not.
