Green Wing: Resuscitated Audible
It’s always interesting to revisit the earlier work of actors who have gone on to become TV royalty, and that’s certainly the case for the star-studded cast of cult sitcom Green Wing. Among those pacing the wards of East Hampton Hospital were a future Oscar winner in Olivia Colman, and telly stalwarts in Stephen Mangan, Tamsin Greig and Michelle Gomez.
As the Channel 4 series approaches its 20th anniversary, the show’s cast has reuinited for a special six-parter, picking up
12 years after the events of the TV version.
Just like much has changed in terms of success for the cast, their characters have also (mostly) progressed. Mangan’s Guy Secretan has become a media personality, adding TV appearances and podcasts to his work as an anaesthetist while Julian Rhindtutt’s Mac has returned from several near-death experiences to pick up as a surgeon. Caroline Todd (Greig), meanwhile, has been making waves as a medical pioneer over in the US, while Harriet Schulenberg (Colman) is now the hospital’s Head of HR. Alan Statham (Mark Heap) hasn’t left the hospital – while his killing spree with Joanna Clore (Pippa Haywood) led to her being imprisoned, his lawyers got him off with a spell in psychiatric care, and he has returned to work...
Not everyone has changed circumstances, though – Sue White (Gomez) remains as East Hampton’s staff liaison officer, and Martin Dear (Karl Theobald) is still not a doctor, despite having been training for the exams when last seen. While these cast reunions can be a bit hit or miss, Green Wing’s stellar cast picks up where it left off and fans of the original won’t be disappointed.
