The Sunday Post (Inverness)

Welcome to my potting shed! This is the column where I’ll share all my gardening hints and tips – and I’ll try to answer any queries you may have.

-

I planted asparagus crowns two years ago. Can I harvest them this month? – Bill Torrance, Bishopton.

No, tempting as it is, hold off until next year before you start to harvest a crop.

Why have my camellias produced so few flowers this year? – Wendy Richardson, Langbank.

The problem has most likely been caused by last summer’s dry spell when this year’s flower buds were forming. In future water your camellia thoroughly during periods of low rainfall.

Are there any low-growing salvias that I could use in a container? – Jenna Chalmers, by email.

Salvia greggii ‘Mirage Rose’ is a dwarf variety with rose and cream-coloured flowers. It holds on to its leaves in mild winters.

What’s wrong with my camassias. They did OK in their first year but haven’t really performed since. – Fiona Walters, Dumfries. Camassias are native to damp meadows of North America so they like a sunny position in moist soil. Try moving them to a sunnier spot and keep them well-watered and they should improve.

How many plants can I get out of a pot of supermarket basil if I split it up? – Ally Mcpherson, by email.

Aim for two or three clumps. Pot them on into good quality compost, feed them weekly and water regularly and they should grow into decent-sized plants. email your questions: ps@sundaypost.com
