Lennon is still on a Cup high!

IT would take something special to top scoring against Bayern Munich in the Olympic Stadium.

For St Mirren manager Danny Lennon, leading his side to League Cup success last season might well have been it.

He’s been in the game long enough to know how quickly lows can follow highs.

But he insists he has no fears as he prepares for the Saints’ defence of the League Cup, starting away to Queen of the South onTuesday night.

Last season, Queens not only stormed away with what was the Second Division — they added the Ramsdens Cup for good measure.

Lennon, who ended last year having to see off a charge from Dundee to secure his club’s top-flight place, is confident he will come out of it okay.

“Listen, being a football manager is a demanding job 24/7,” he said.

“When things are going your way everyone gives you messages and encouragement and wants a bit of your time.

“But when things aren’t going your way, a lot of people keep their distance.

“Some will even try and bring you down in certain areas.

“That is when you need good staff, good people behind you and good mental strength.

“But I am lucky in that I have a tremendous faith and I find the greater the challenge the more strength I find.

“Whatever happens this week, the Cup win will live with me for the rest of my life. It was amazing and surreal at the same time.”

And he points out, he’s had his fair share of successes.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have some real highs in my career,” said Lennon.

“Making my debut for Hibs when I was still just a kid was great.

“Then there were the back to back promotions with Cowdenbeath in my first two seasons and, of course, scoring against Bayern Munich for Raith Rovers in the Olympic Stadium in Munich.

“I think that will be the first time ever Cowdenbeath and Bayern Munich have been in the same sentence!”
