You can bet on Lennon to act

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

CELTIC boss Neil Lennon says he’d take immediate action against any player he found betting on his own team.

The issue of footballers gambling has become a hot topic after Rangers midfielder Ian Black was charged by the SFA.

Lennon is not overly concerned about players who have a flutter on other games, but is adamant they should not be matches involving their home club.

He said:“Since I’ve been in the game, players have been betting on football.

“The one thing you can’t do is bet on your own team.

“I think that’s the bottom line because it can open up a host of accusations that can be thrown at you.

“I’ve never known a player to bet on his own team.

“I’m not saying that to take the moral high ground. I just think it’s an unwritten rule.

“I would take a hugely dim view of it at our club, I really would

“I would never have done it myself. It would prey on your mind, before during or after the game.

“I’m not aware of any players betting on a game involving my teams.

“It might have happened and I don’t know about it.

“If I find any of my players betting on us or certainly betting against us, they’d be in a lot of trouble.

“I’m not casting aspersions and nobody has been found guilty, but I think it’s a serious charge.”
